The mission of Partners in School Innovation (Partners) is to transform teaching and learning in the lowest-performing public schools so that every student, regardless of background, thrives.  Our work is to improve school outcomes for students of color and English Learners living in poverty, and our unique approach to changing lives rests upon a foundation of teamwork.  We collaborate with teachers and leaders in vulnerable public schools to help build their capacity to support breakthrough student achievement.


The key to our success is a comprehensive approach to school transformation that strengthens teaching, leading and achievement across a district system.  We work shoulder-to-shoulder with teachers and leaders at schools and in central offices to:   i) build a strong core instructional program that ensures all students learn at high levels; ii) create and establish systems for professional learning so that all teachers are able to deliver excellent instruction; and, iii) strengthen results-oriented leadership so that leaders can carry out the daily actions necessary to lead whole school improvement efforts successfully.

The Opportunity

Directors of School Transformation (DSTs) ensure Quality Implementation of our School Transformation Approach. They set expectations, guide and monitor the quality and effectiveness of service delivery in our partnership schools, while working closely with the Regional Executive Director and Program Support Team to ensure fidelity of the program and services. In addition, they work with School Innovation Partners to establish a vision and design the core strategy for supporting Results-Oriented Leadership and Teacher Professional Learning for each school.  DSTs monitor our implementation and progress across schools – in terms of capacity of adult practices, systems and structure development, and student achievement.  Our DSTs embody the mindsets and practices we aim to engender in our partners: social justice, results-orientation, and continuous learning.  They catalyze and support district and school transformation by leading a highly effective team.

Our Directors of School Transformation will


  • In collaboration with the District Transformation Director, develop and manage relationships with school district leaders who provide principal leadership, support and accountability:
  • Supporting them to develop an in-depth understanding of our School Transformation Approach
  • Providing them with regular feedback and data on the progress of our work and the lessons learned from our partnerships with their schools
  • Working with them to identify ways that district leaders and district systems can better support school transformation.
  • Co-designing and facilitating leadership networks and/or professional learning communities for intended to accelerate the implementation of our Approach.
  • Supporting the District Transformation Director and/or Regional Executive Director to:
  • Designing a strategy for spreading the successes of our intensive and strategic schools across the district
  • Identifying priority objectives and strategies for implementing our District Transformation Approach
  • Designing the annual scope of work for the district.
  • In collaboration with School Innovation Partners develop and manage relationships with school leaders who provide teacher leadership, support and accountability:
  • Supporting them to develop an in-depth understanding of our School Transformation Approach
  • Supporting/coaching them in developing the attributes of Results Oriented Leadership
  • Providing them with regular feedback and data on the progress of our work and the lessons learned from our partnerships with their schools
  • Working with them to identify ways that site leaders and site systems can better support school transformation
  • Designing a strategy for spreading school transformation strategies into each grade level/department
  • Identifying priority objectives and strategies for implementing our School Transformation Approach
  • Designing the annual scope of work for each school site.
  • As team leaders
  • Assist in recruiting and hiring of new School Innovation Partners  as needed; deploy the team of School Innovation Partners to deliver services to schools.
  • Set performance goals, conduct annual talent assessments and performance reviews to assess individuals’ results and potential.
  • Meet with and conduct field observations of School Innovation Partners in order to support their implementation of the approach, ensure execution of the school coaching strategy, and provide ongoing feedback on their development in their role.
  • Work with the Program Support Team to develop and manage a team professional learning plan.
  • Engage in Organizational Stewardship
  • Participate in continuous learning and strengthening of Partner’s Approach and services by capturing and sharing best practices from the work in the schools and district.
  • Participate in personal and organizational professional development.
  • Manage relationships with funders who provide specific resources to the district or schools.
  • Work with the Regional Executive Director and our Development staff to provide regular progress updates on our implementation and results to our funders.


To be considered, candidates should have:


  • A strong commitment to our mission of achieving educational equity for low-income students of color
  • Racial and cultural competence – an understanding of the role of racism in the inequities of the public school system and demonstrated effectiveness in working through these inequities
  • A deep understanding of the bodies of research on which our work is based, especially as it might pertain to schools – literacy and language development, equity-focused professional learning in schools and districts, organizational change and leadership – combined with a strong desire to apply that knowledge to generate impact
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to manage relationships with a range of stakeholders
  • Excellent presentation skills; able to project competence and knowledge, and to articulate both mission and solutions
  • Strong collaboration skills and experience leading highly effective teams
  • Ability to think systematically with an eye for continuous learning and improvement
  • Experience and interest in analyzing and acting on data
  • A high degree of initiative and tenacity and flexibility; willingness and drive to see a difficult or ambiguous situation through to a satisfactory outcome
  • The ability to work efficiently with attention to detail in a fast-paced environment


We particularly value:

  • A record of managing others to achieve ambitious goals
  • A track record of results and established credibility as a school or district leader
  • Experience teaching in public elementary schools
  • Specific knowledge of or experience leading data-driven continuous improvement processes
  • Specific knowledge of the common core state standards and assessments, comprehensive literacy programs and an intimate understanding of the research base supporting these programs
  • Program development experience in the field of education reform
  • Advanced degree in education or related field
